G&W Contracts were appointed as the Principal Contractor for a critical medium-voltage electrical infrastructure upgrade at a live distribution facility. The project's core objective was to modernise the site's power supply by decommissioning obsolete equipment and installing a new, higher-capacity system, all while ensuring an uninterrupted power supply to the client's essential operations.
The works commenced with the safe de-energisation, disconnection, and removal of two existing 10KV transformers and their GRP housing units, which had become incompatible with the network's upgrade to a 20KV system. This was followed by the installation of two new, larger three-phase, oil-immersed transformers—one rated at 1000KVA and another at 1600KVA. The project encompassed all associated civil works to facilitate new cable routes, the construction of new larger GRP housing units to accommodate the upgraded transformers, and the complete electrical fit-out. This included all new primary and secondary connections from the transformers to the external electrical panels.
To maintain a fully live site with zero impact on the facility's distribution operations, a complex temporary power system was engineered and implemented, utilising two large-scale generators. This meticulous planning and execution ensured a seamless transition to the new 20KV infrastructure, future-proofing the client's electrical capacity and enhancing the resilience of their core operations.
